Transparent LAN (TLAN)/Virtual Private Networks

Ace Communications Group is proud to be an authorised reseller of the Nextep Broadband Network.

A Transparent LAN (TLAN) is a layer 2, switched Ethernet, private network. A TLAN is a fast and secure way to transfer information directly between two or more sites, without incurring traffic charges. The product boasts the following benefits:

  • No authentication/encryption
  • Direct communication between sites
  • Increased response times
  • No volume based traffic charges
  • Suitable for voice and video applications
  • No firewall required
  • No need for user names and passwords
  • Eliminates external hacking, spamming and other attacks
  • No IP VPN devices required
  • Supports IP, IPX, AppleTalk and NetBEUI
  • Private IP addressing schemes supported
  • Pre-configured hardware provided
  • TLAN connections available using DSL, Dial-up, ISDN and Wireless

What are the features?

The TLAN product is a fast and secure way to transfer information directly between two or more sites, without incurring traffic charges. Compared with a traditional Internet based VPN, response times between TLAN sites are increased by hardware based switching and not routing. This provides lower and more consistent latency and therefore the demands of real time applications such as voice and video are easily met.

Due to the TLAN's in-built security, external hacking, spamming or other attacks are eliminated, even though a firewall is not required. The TLAN does not need to establish tunnels to pass data securely across the network. Data communication occurs directly between any two sites (refer to diagram on previous page) and is not required to pass through a single head office site first.

The TLAN also eliminates the need for usernames and passwords. Because end user traffic is separated into dedicated logical Ethernet networks, it doesn't require authentication or encryption. Data transparency enables many different layer 3 protocols to be used, including IP, IPX, AppleTalk and NetBEUI, and private IP addressing schemes are supported.

How is the TLAN different to a traditional VPN (Virtual Private Network)?

The TLAN links sites into a WAN by configuration of the core switch equipment when it is first established. Sites are uniquely identified by their location in the network and no login or password authentication is required. The private network is always on, and does not require tunnels to be established to a shared network.

A traditional VPN is a private network created virtually on top of a public or shared network such as the Internet. Software tunnelling and encryption technologies such as IPSec, PPP, L2TP or PPTP are used to establish the VPN. Each tunnel creates a point-to-point connection from one site to another. Establishment of these links usually requires user authentication based on username/password. As connection for a traditional VPN may be dependant on authentication, it is possible for unauthorised site access to a customer's VPN if hackers are able to obtain the login and password. The diagram below shows an example of a traditional Internet based VPN.

If you believe you can advantage from deploying a Transparent LAN (TLAN) for your business please feel free to contact us on 1300 ACE COM (1300 223 266) or sales@acecommunications.com.au.
